Q&As for Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Users

Size and Accessibility of Cover Page

1.       Q.  Can I change the size of the Cover page so I do not have to scroll?

A.  Yes. On your Acrobat 6.0 toolbar is a magnification level, with a plus sign to the right and a minus sign to the left. Click once on the minus sign to reduce the magnification from 100% to 75%.

2.       Q.  How can I return to the Cover page after I have opened other documents?

A.  The best way to return to the Cover page depends on how many documents you have open and how much moving around within them you've done. If the answers are not many and not much, you can return to the Cover by clicking the Back button at the bottom of your Acrobat screen to cycle through the previous views until the Cover reappears.

If you haven't opened too many documents but you've moved around a lot in them, you can drop down either the Window menu or the File menu and, if Cover is listed there, click on it.

No matter how many documents you've opened or how much you've moved around, you can open Bookmarks in any document and click on E+ Master Table of Contents, then click on the Home button in the lower right hand corner on that Master Table of Contents page.

Following Links

3.       Q.  Why does a link to a reference take me to the first page of the reference document instead of the place within the document indicated by the reference?

A.  You must reset a default preference as follows: Edit>Preferences>General>deselect " Open cross-document links in same window."

That is, Click Edit to reveal the dropdown menu, then click Preferences. On the left hand panel, select General. Clear (i.e., uncheck) the line that reads "Open cross-document links in same window."

Searching with Acrobat 6.0

4.       Q.  Why should I initiate searches from the E+ cover page rather than from the Acrobat 6.0 search pane?

A.  The Acrobat 6.0 Search Pane defaults to the E+ Comprehensive search. It is more involved to get to the Regulations-only or Text-only search using the Acrobat 6.0 Search Pane. Therefore, we have provided a fairly simple way of giving you access to all three searches directly from the E+ Cover page. The E+ Search box that appears on the cover page when you select a Search allows you to use word stemming and/or match case. It is automatically set to search for phrases exactly as you enter them.

Your search results will appear in the Acrobat 6.0 Search Pane and you will be able to utilize the contextual references that Acrobat 6.0 provides. You will also see a button labeled "New Search" in the Search Pane. If you click that "New Search" button, you will access only the E+ Comprehensive search; you cannot limit the search to just regulations or just E+ text. To conduct a new search, do not click “New Search” on the Search Pane. Returning to the E+ Cover will give you the easiest access to all three E+ searches.

You do not have certain advanced search features, such as boolean operators (e.g., AND, OR, NOT) using the E+ Cover page search box. To access advanced features, you must initiate searches from the Acrobat 6.0 Search Pane (opened by clicking on the Search icon on your toolbar, which appears as a set of binoculars). To access the regulations-only or text-only E+ search from the Search Pane, you must be in advanced search mode (you can set this option as your default through Edit, Preferences, Search), and you must change the “Look in” drop down in the Search Pane to "Select index." You will then get a box allowing you to choose one of the three E+ searches. The "Look in" field will then say "Currently selected indexes." Whichever index you chose will stay selected until you again change the "Look in" field to "Select index" and make a different selection, or until you exit E+.

Important Note: E+ 2.6 was created for use with Acrobat 5.0 Reader. Acrobat 6.0 employs a different search engine, which is not completely “backward” compatible. A plug-in for Acrobat 6.0 exists that allows Acrobat 6.0 to communicate with searches designed for Acrobat 5.0. This plug-in should be part of the Acrobat 6.0 Reader that you downloaded if you requested the full Reader version. However, if you are experiencing difficulty employing the E+ searches, your first step should be to ensure that you have a file called Search5.api in your Acrobat 6.0 folder. In addition, Java Script must be enabled for search functionality (6.0 allows administrators to turn it off; see your IT Administrator if you are having problems with the E+ Search).

5.       Q.  When I start typing into the E+ Search dialog box, why do I get a message about form fields, advising me to use Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional or Standard?

A.  The E+ Search dialog box is not a true dialog box; it was created using forms to provide easier access to the E+ searches than the Acrobat 6.0 Search provides (see Q4). All you need do is click “Do not show this message again” and the message should not reappear in any subsequent E+ sessions. Your search capability is unaffected.

6.       Q.  Why does the search take so long?

A.  Adobe Reader 6.0 searches, especially those using the Comprehensive index, do take significantly longer than searches in 5.0. We believe this is a result of the different search engine used by 6.0. It may take you a while to get used to the wait; try to resist stopping the search even if it seems to be going on too long, until you get a feel for how your particular operating system interacts with 6.0.

7.       Q.  What do the + symbols next to the entries on the search results list mean?

A.  That means there is more than one instance of the search term in the document. Clicking on the plus sign reveals each “hit” and some of the words surrounding it in the document. You can go to any specific instance in the list by clicking on it.

8.       Q.  Why are my search results limited to 100 documents?

A.  That is the default setting. If you want to see more (or fewer) results, go to Edit> Preferences> Search, and enter the limit you prefer.

9.       Q.  How do I retrieve the results of my most recent search?

A.  After you have run a Search, you can close the Search Pane by clicking either “done” (near the bottom) or “Hide” (near the top). If you click Hide, the same search results will reappear when you click on the Search icon on your Acrobat 6.0 toolbar (which appears as a set of binoculars).

10.    Q.  Should I use “Done” or “Hide” to close the Search pane?

A.  “Done” erases the search results list, although you can still view the documents that were on the results list by going to Edit>Search Results. “Hide” preserves the list until you run a new search or end your E+ session. See Q9.

11.    Q.  What will E+ search for when I enter a phrase into the E+ Search box?

A.  Only incidences of the phrase exactly as you typed it will be found. See Q4.

12.    Q.  When I use E+ with the full version of Adobe Acrobat 6.0, why do I get a message upon exiting asking me if I want to save cover.pdf?

A.  As explained in Q5, this is a result of using forms to create the E+ Search box. Clicking "Yes" will simply save the last entry you made in the search box for when you next open E+. In most cases, you will want to click "No" to the save inquiry, but clicking "Yes" will not otherwise affect the functionality of your E+.

Find Function

13.    Q.  My "Find" icon is no longer available; how do I search within a document?

A.  The Find function is incorporated into the Search function in Acrobat 6.0. To find a word or phrase in the document that you have open and displayed on your screen, click the Search icon on your Acrobat 6.0 toolbar (which appears as a set of binoculars). When the Search Pane appears, be sure that the selection under “Where would you like to search?” is set to “In the current PDF document.”

Navigation Buttons

14.    Q.  Why don't I have navigation buttons on my toolbar?

A.  On the Acrobat 6.0 Reader screen, the navigation buttons are on the status line at the bottom of your screen rather than on the toolbar near the top of the screen. If you do not have navigation buttons at all, right click on any empty spot on your toolbar. A list of options will drop down; check "Navigation."

When the panel with navigation icons appears, you can drag it to any empty spot on the toolbar.
