Poll: Majority of Americans Oppose Automatic Education Spending Cuts

As the fiscal cliff draws nearer, 55 percent of Americans say education programs should be spared automatic spending cuts, according to a poll by the Foundation for Education Investment and the Committee for Education Funding. Sixty-six percent said that education programs should not be cut at all or not cut as deeply as other programs, such as defense. The survey also showed that a majority of Americans overestimate the amount of federal spending that goes toward education. Still, 43 percent of poll respondents said that too little is spent on education funding, compared with 24 percent who said too much is spent.
