NASFAA Board Leadership Accepts Resignation of Dr. Philip R. Day, Jr.

At the request of Dr. Philip Day, the NASFAA Board of Directors leadership has accepted his resignation as President and CEO of NASFAA. Dr. Day began a voluntary, unpaid leave of absence when news broke about allegations filed against him, in regard to his prior employment at City College of San Francisco. Immediately after these developments, NASFAA leadership announced the appointment of Joan Crissman as Interim President and CEO, who will continue to serve in this role for the immediate future.

Ms. Crissman has worked for the Association for more than 32 years and has served as NASFAA's Executive Vice President. She also served as NASFAA's Interim President after Past President Dr. Dallas Martin retired in 2007.

Dr. Day's latest request, made to the Board leadership on July 16th, was based upon his assessment of the amount of time that would be necessary to address and resolve the San Francisco situation. He felt very strongly that it was imperative that the Association be insulated from and not distracted by any future developments related to this situation. "We extend to Dr. Day our sincere appreciation for his leadership over the last 16 months," said NASFAA 2009-10 National Chair Dr. Barry Simmons. "We accept his resignation knowing that it is in the best interests of the Association and so that he can focus his full attention on these recent developments."

"Joanie is well respected among financial aid administrators and among the higher education community at-large," Simmons continued. "We have no doubt that all NASFAA services to members and advocacy on behalf of students will continue at their highest levels."

For nearly four decades, NASFAA has been the voice of financial aid on many fronts. Professional development efforts and other important membership services will not be disrupted. NASFAA's advocacy efforts are strong and important projects that listen to and respond to member issues and concerns, such as the National Conversation Initiative created under Dr. Day’s leadership, and will only be heightened in the weeks and months ahead.

"My devotion to NASFAA and the more than 20,000 financial aid administrators it represents has never been stronger," Crissman said. "Together we will ensure that our important work continues uninterrupted."
