Federal Student Financial Aid: A National Profile of Programs in Title IV of the Higher Education Act
As college costs have soared, more and more Americans have relied on federal student financial assistance programs to help them meet their postsecondary education expenses. Data from the U.S. Department of Education show that the number of students applying for financial assistance rose from around 11 million in 2001-2002 to nearly 14 million in 2004-2005.
Given the importance of federal financial aid, it is important that Congress and the general public become more aware of these programs and the students they serve. To help increase knowledge of these vital programs, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) produced Federal Student Financial Aid: A National Profile of Programs in Title IV of the Higher Education Act. This National Profile provides detailed information about each of the programs authorized under Title IV, including program descriptions, number of students served, and program appropriations over the past ten years.
