URL: http://www.cossi.org/index.php
Other Information: COSSI is an affiliation of sponsoring summer camps and summer programs committed to providing scholarships in 2002 and beyond to the children of 9/11. Its affiliates include camps and programs, which have already created scholarships as well as those engaging for the first time. Its affiliates come from all corners of the country. The numbers of children involved are too overwhelming to be resolved in the Northeast alone. The guidelines of participation are relatively simple, but the overall message is powerful.
COSSI will reach out to the families of 9/11 through coordination with the 9/11 Funds Coordination effort provided by New York State Attorney General Spitzer's office. COSSI will provide necessary search tools on its Internet Site to enable the families to search for summer scholarships that meet their needs. The Fund Coordinator's Office and the American Red Cross are establishing an independent data bank that will be used to verify eligibility of participating families.
COSSI acts as an E-Clearinghouse for summer scholarships for the children of 9/11, who have lost a mother, father or provider. Families qualified through the September 11 Scholarship Alliance (and indirectly through the New York Attorney General's Office) can come to COSSI and browse available scholarships and information from contributing summer camps and programs. They then can contact any contributing camp or summer program directly through the available E link or by phone. The contributing camp can verify the family's qualifications through a link to be provided by COSSI. The family and contributing program can then make their own arrangements directly.
