Free Pastries at the Committee for Education Funding

June 22, 2012 -- This morning I attended the weekly Committee for Education Funding meeting, which I especially enjoy because of the coffee and pastries they serve during the social time before the meeting officially begins. Today was an interesting meeting because of the potential agreement between the Democrats and Republicans on funding for the interest rate extension. We also discussed the passage of the Farm Bill, which was significant because of the McCain-Murray amendment that requires reports on the potential impacts of sequestration -- a process that could result in automatic cuts to domestic spending programs like student aid. 

Finally, the meeting concluded with the presentation of a survey conducted by North Star Opinion Research and Hart Research Associates. The survey regarded Education in the 2012 Election, specifically focusing on the attitudes and priorities of voters in key swing states. The survey explored the degrees to which voters are focusing on the issue of education in this year’s election, what specific aspects of education are most important to them, and how they feel about various education policy proposals. It found that education is an issue that up for grabs in the 2012 elections. It states that Democrats have a slightly better position than Republicans, but the reality is that neither party had the broad support of swing state voters when it comes to the 2012 election. Overall, this week has proved to be very busy and extremely exciting! I’m amazed at all of the opportunities I have been presented with while working at NASFAA, and I continue to learn more and more each day! The internship has proved to be extremely rewarding and I’m so thankful.
