Mark Brown Resigns as Head of Federal Student Aid Amid Pressure From Democrats

Newly confirmed Education Secretary Miguel Cardona announced Friday that he had accepted the resignation of Mark Brown as the chief operating officer of Federal Student Aid (FSA).

As the head of FSA, Brown oversaw the student loan portfolio held by the agency and has recently faced pressure from Democrats to resign. Brown was appointed to the role by former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and his term was set to expire in March 2022. His departure gives the Biden administration the ability to select its own appointee for the role, which has seen an increase in turnover in the past five years.

FSA “will renew its focus on streamlining access to and management of federal financial aid, easing the burden of student debt, and carefully stewarding taxpayer dollars,” Cardona said in a statement. Robin Minor, the current deputy chief operating officer for partner participation and oversight, will serve as acting chief operating officer.
