Trending @ NASFAA: ED Notifies Schools of Missing GE Data

By Joan Berkes, Policy & Federal Relations Staff

The Department of Education (ED) is contacting institutions that have not reported data for academic programs that are classified as gainful employment (GE) programs in ED records. If your institution receives such a notification but you believe you either have no GE programs or have properly completed reporting for all of your GE programs, you should go into the GE Program Tracking page on NSLDS to see which CIP codes and Credential Levels triggered the letter.

As noted in a more detailed article published in Today’s News on August 26, an institution’s gainful employment programs may be listed in NSLDS as a result of the Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) system or Federal Student Aid (FSA) records, as well as institutional reporting of GE data. The GE Program Tracking List shows the source of the GE designation for any given program.

According to the NSLDS Gainful Employment User Guide (chapter 4), the “Source COD” column will indicate YES when the program was supplied to NSLDS by COD or an FSA online user. The “Source GE” column will indicate YES if the program was supplied by an institution’s reporting of GE data, or NO if the program has not been provided by the institution’s reporting of GE data. A combination of YES in the Source COD column and NO in the Source GE column means the school needs to either:

  • Report GE student records for this program; or
  • Update the status of the program if it is designated as a GE program in error.

See the User Guide for detailed instructions on reporting and correcting information.
