This week many of your presidents will receive a letter from the American Council on Education and multiple undersigned organizations, including NASFAA, asking for institutional support to extend the Perkins Loan Program for an additional year. This is an additional attempt to revive the program by attaching it to the upcoming final fiscal year (FY) 2016 budget bill after an extension failed in the Senate in September. NASFAA is aware and supportive of this effort and encourages institutions to sign-on to help the effort gain momentum.
In addition, on Friday, the presidents and chancellors of the Big Ten colleges and universities wrote a letter to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) – the Senate majority and minority leaders, respectively – urging them to approve a bill for a one-year extension of the Perkins Loan Program, which the House previously passed. The Perkins Loan Program expired last month after Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) blocked the extension bill. The Big Ten leaders called the program "an integral part of the financial aid packages ... available to students with the greatest need" and urged the Senate to extend the program until Congress completes a comprehensive reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.
