NEWS FROM NASFAA

 Austin 2018

Just one conversation can change the course of your entire life. For 2018 NASFAA National Conference opening session speaker Wes Moore, that conversation was one with his mother and a financial aid administrator at Johns Hopkins University. When he was accepted to the prestigious university after completing a two-year degree, Moore said his glee was quickly replaced with anxiety and defeat when he saw what it would cost to attend.

 Austin 2018

A roomful of financial aid administrators were presented with a difficult challenge just before the official kickoff of the 2018 NASFAA National Conference — to think differently about the way they think. As institutions of higher education are creating strategic plans to increase diversity and inclusion on campus, Lena Tenney, coordinator of public engagement at The Ohio State University's Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, told NASFAA members that in order to make significant change for their students, they need to recognize their own subconscious biases.

The Department of Education (ED) has seen a significant decrease in Direct Loan delinquency rates and defaults over the past couple of months, according to new data from the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA). FSA found that the rate of delinquency on Direct Loans, which it defines as a lack of payment for 31 or more days, was at an “all-time low” since FSA began reporting on the metric in 2013.

"Students seeking relief on their college and graduate-school debt could be sitting on a hidden tax bomb: Billions of dollars in one-time bills from the Internal Revenue Service for any debt they get forgiven," The Wall Street Journal reports.
