NEWS FROM NASFAA

NASFAA hosted an event on Capitol Hill Tuesday to inform congressional staff and the public about the current state of federal financial aid. During the event, NASFAA’s policy team presented the 2019 NAFSAA National Student Aid Profile, which details the six prominent federal financial aid programs, and provides the most up-to-date appropriations data on each program. In addition, Christopher Pollard, the assistant director of financial aid at the George Washington University Law School and a member of NASFAA's first Diversity Leadership Program class, spoke about financial aid administrators' responsibilities and the challenges they face while trying to help students. Be sure to check out our Facebook page for pictures of the event!

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have in recent months shown interest in allowing students to use Pell Grant funds for short-term, non-credit-bearing programs. While some have touted that expanding eligibility for the federal aid program could give students more flexibility to pursue alternative paths to a higher education, others have expressed concern that doing so without increasing investment in the program could do more harm than good.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

With the annual conference now behind us, NASFAA is looking forward to next year's National Conference in Las Vegas. The 2020 National Conference Program Task Force is looking for member volunteers. The task force, which will begin its work in September and conclude by March of next year, will focus on developing the program for the 2020 conference through one in-person meeting in late fall, and calls and emails throughout the working period. Each year, more than 2,000 financial aid professionals from across the country attend the National Conference to teach, learn, network, and share best practices. Make sure your voice is heard in developing the next conference and making it the best yet. Read through the full task force charter and, if interested, apply to volunteer by 5:00 p.m. ET Wednesday, August 7.
