NEWS FROM NASFAA

As college costs rise, some institutions are expanding lending options to include income share agreements. Colorado Mountain College launched its new financial aid initiative called Fund Sueños (the Dream Fund) on Sept. 20, 2018. “Fund Sueños was created primarily for our DACA students in Colorado,” said Shane Larson, vice president of student affairs.

A dozen Republican governors sent a letter to the leaders of the Senate committee tasked with reauthorizing the Higher Education Act (HEA) last week, urging them to expand Pell Grant eligibility to incarcerated students and students in short-term training programs.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

As we move toward the next reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, NASFAA, through a grant-funded project, is further exploring ways to make the FAFSA and overall federal aid application process more efficient for students and families. The FAFSA Simplification Working Group met last week for the first time to begin examining how new federal tax forms change NASFAA’s current FAFSA simplification proposals. The group is tasked with developing recommendations to be incorporated into a final paper written by NASFAA staff and compiling a set of proposals that will be reviewed for approval by NASFAA’s Board of Directors.

According to guidance NASFAA has received from the Department of Education (ED), a copy of the tax return is acceptable to complete verification if it shows at least the last four digits of the Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN). Otherwise, it is not acceptable. The same is true for IRS tax transcripts or any other IRS tax documents.
