NEWS FROM NASFAA

Howard Leslie

Meet Howard Leslie. Howard has worked in financial aid for 43 years. After graduating with three undergraduate degrees in music and theater and a master's degree in psychology, Howard got his start in the profession as a guidance counselor at a career school helping students access financial aid. In addition to assisting NASFAA with its advocacy efforts and conferences, Howard is currently the president of the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association (NYSFAAA), and has been active in multiple state and regional associations.

 DLP

NASFAA’s Diversity Leadership Program (DLP) provides selectees from a wide range of diverse backgrounds with a robust portfolio of benefits, mentorship, and guidance on how to develop as a financial aid association leader at the state, regional, and national level. Meet each member of the 2019-20 DLP class over the next few weeks by reading their profiles on NASFAA’s website. This week, learn more about Carlos Garcia, a financial aid technician at Southeast Community College, who has made it his goal to improve the student experience in higher education after his financial aid staff helped him complete college despite the struggles he faced as a first-generation, minority student.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

One of the most common questions asked about the Certified Financial Aid Administrator® (CFAA) Program is how to prepare for the CFAA Exam. During a recent webinar that aired in January, a panel of four CFAAs shared how they prepared for the exam and what the testing experience entailed. The recording of the webinar is free to watch and available to everyone — simply register online. You can also review the topics covered on the exam within the Candidate Handbook on pages 8-13. You may be surprised to find that your professional experiences have taught you more than you may think!

Blue Icon

Being a new financial aid director comes with a list of questions and issues. Blue Icon Advisors recently hosted group coaching for new financial aid directors to address some of these critical financial aid management areas. "Each week I learned new ways to be a better manager, aid administrator, and enrollment management professional," one participant commented. Join our complimentary webinar on February 25 at 2:00 p.m. ET to hear from three participants about their experiences and pick up a tip or two on where your focus should be during your first year as a director.
