NEWS FROM NASFAA

Higher education funding has been severely hampered by past economic downturns, but what makes the fallout from the novel coronavirus more dire has stemmed primarily from the outbreak’s timing. The virus has led to unprecedented uncertainty across all economic sectors and has reached new peaks in the middle of the state budgeting process with no near-term end in sight, forcing states to make difficult projections as they aim to balance their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year, all the while trying to garner what sort of federal aid could be coming their way.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASFAA is looking forward to next year's National Conference in National Harbor, Maryland. The work of this task force will be focused on the program for the National Conference to be held June 27-June 30, 2021. The group will utilize multiple online meetings for its work — beginning in late August 2020 and concluding in March 2021— in developing high-quality educational conference sessions that reach the various interests and sectors of the NASFAA membership. The national conference brings financial aid professionals from across the country together to teach, learn, network, and share best practices. Make sure your voice is heard in developing the next conference and making it the best yet. Read through the full task force charter and, if interested, apply to volunteer by 5:00 p.m. ET on Monday, August 10.

According to guidance NASFAA has received from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), it depends on whether the student was scheduled to be enrolled in Module 2 and is a withdrawal, or the student graduated after Module 1. Tending to mental health is of the utmost importance for those on college campuses today — not just for the student body, but for staff, as well — as it can have far-reaching effects on our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. NASFAA members can attest to the fact that financial aid is a high-stress profession, but some may lack emotional support or have additional external stressors that foster an environment for less-than-ideal mental and emotional wellness. Join us Wednesday, August 5, at 1:00 p.m. ET, for NASFAA’s pop-up webinar where presenters Dr. Mike Ronsisvalle and Alana Sadhu, both of the Florida Counseling Centers' LiveWell Coaching program, will provide evidence-based solutions you can use to reduce your stress level. This webinar is free to NASFAA members, but you must register in advance.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Throughout July 2020, Federal Student Aid has been reminding federal student loan borrowers and TEACH Grant recipients that relief measures currently in place due to the COVID-19 emergency are not permanent and will expire. These reminders, emailed to cohorts of borrowers from the address [email protected], encourage borrowers to start planning. The email notifications also prepare borrowers to receive six additional notifications sent over the next few months. During the period of July 27–31, 2020, Federal Student Aid will send customized emails to the cohort of borrowers who are still in school.
