NEWS FROM NASFAA

While enrollment trends this semester look dim due to the ongoing pandemic, multi-year trends paint a far more troubling picture, according to a report from the Center for American Progress. From the 2014-15 to the 2018-19 academic year, enrollment at institutions of higher education dropped an average of 5 percentage points, equating to more than 1 million students. At public four-year institutions, enrollment dropped by 2.5 percentage points, or 425,000 students.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

AskRegs

There has not been any specific written guidance to date from the U.S. Department of Education (ED) concerning the handling of unclaimed Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) student grants. However, our understanding is that the requirement that funds not be permitted to escheat to the state applies broadly to all federal funds, not only Title IV funds, and HEERF would therefore be included. This weekend, on October 24 we'll celebrate NASFAA Member Appreciation day — the anniversary of NASFAA's founding in 1966. Even though we celebrate on the day of NASFAA's founding, the day is about NASFAA members — the lifeblood of our organization! To help celebrate, take a look back at the last several decades of the work that you, our members, have accomplished in our timelines chronicling each decade of NASFAA’s existence. The timelines track how the world of financial aid has transformed and evolved over the years. On behalf of the NASFAA staff, thank you for all you do!

Successful consulting does not always need to occur face-to-face. Blue Icon Advisors, NASFAA Consulting, and the Standards of Excellence review program offer remote compliance and consulting services to schools as a lower-cost (but not lower-quality) alternative to being on campus. Attend our webinar on November 10 at 2:00 p.m. ET to learn about remote services and how they can help you achieve your goals. This 60-minute webinar is free, but you must register in advance.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
