NEWS FROM NASFAA

House Democrats recently re-elected Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.) to serve as chair of the Education and Labor Committee for the 117th Congress. Scott placed an emphasis on addressing education achievement gaps, the deep economic recession, and unprecedented challenges imposed by the ongoing pandemic for his upcoming stint as committee leader.

NASFAA on Friday joined a number of higher education advocates in calling on Congress to extend the current suspension of monthly payments and interest accrual for all federal student loans until Dec. 31, 2021, or until the federal government formally declares an end to the pandemic, whichever occurs later. Though the Department of Education (ED) on Friday announced a one-month extension on the current moratorium for federally-held student loans, until Jan. 31, 2021, NASFAA’s most recent request to Congress would extend the benefits to all federal student loan borrowers. NASFAA has twice recently asked ED to extend pandemic relief for student loan borrowers. The new letter applauds ED’s efforts at the outset of the pandemic to provide borrowers with critical relief, and Congress’ subsequent inclusion of borrower relief provisions in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. ED’s latest action effectively puts the ball in the Biden administration’s court to extend the relief further.
