While there have been calls to return to the Family Federal Education Loan (FFEL) program, that may not be the best way to address inefficiencies in the federal student loan system and reduce student loan debt nationwide, according to a new paper from the American Enterprise Institute’s (AEI) Jason Delisle.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASFAA is looking for a student to fill a 12-week paid internship with NASFAA's Policy and Federal Relations staff. The intern will help develop advocacy materials; attend and report on hearings, events, and meetings; analyze and summarize legislation and regulations; and much more. Those students studying in fields related to higher education, public policy, political science, and history may benefit most from this internship. If you know graduate or undergraduate students who may be interested, please encourage them to apply. This internship is supported by the Dallas Martin Endowment for Public Policy and Student Aid. Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, March 1, 2019, to be considered.

"The U.S. Department of Education has recommended that a federal panel renew recognition for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, a controversial regional accreditor of two-year colleges in California and other Western states," Inside Higher Ed reports.

"President Donald Trump’s travel ban already has harmed some of the nation’s top universities, stranding students, faculty and scholars abroad and making foreign schools more attractive to some of the world’s brightest students, lawyers for the learning institutions told a federal judge," according to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

"University of Michigan-Flint director of financial aid Lori Vedder has been elected to a three year leadership position with a national education association," according to the University of Michigan-Flint News. "Vedder will start her year-long role as national chair elect of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) in July. One year later, she’ll be the national chair of the Washington D.C.-based group. The following year, she’ll help her successor transition to the job."
