NEWS FROM NASFAA

Want to see how proposed budget cuts would affect your campus? NASFAA's new Budget Effect Estimator (BEE) paints a picture of what proposed cuts in President Donald Trump's fiscal year 2018 budget proposal will mean for students at individual colleges across the country. Watch our short tutorial to see how the BEE works and what information you can collect on your institution. After you've armed yourself with school-specific information, consider reaching out to your member of Congress to let them know how the budget cuts would affect your school and urge them to push back against the cuts.

 Off the Cuff

This week on "Off The Cuff," Justin and Megan dive into recently-released guidance from the Department of Education on year-round Pell Grant implementation, and how it will affect schools and students. The team discusses what we know so far about Education Secretary Betsy DeVos's intended pick to head FSA – Dr. A Wayne Johnson – and Allie outlines recent developments with the DACA program. The team picks the winners of the "Off The Cuff" super-fan quiz and announces who will join us on stage in San Diego. Plus, Justin and Megan share their pre-conference rituals, and their favorite past conference locations.

Student loan servicers are again in the hot seat with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), this time facing complaints that they mismanaged administration of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. A CFPB report, released Thursday, highlights borrower complaints about how their student loan servicers delayed, denied, or mishandled access to PSLF. Read more about the report and check out video of borrowers who have exprienced these challenges.

And The Winners Are...

Last week NASFAA published an "Off The Cuff" fan quiz to give a few members the chance to join us on stage for a live podcast recording in San Diego. This week on "Off The Cuff," we announced the winners: Chandra Owen of Michigan State University, Kelly Schneider of Eastern Michigan University, and Brenda Hicks of Southwestern College. Be sure to join us in the exhibit hall when the podcast starts, where we will have one final challenge for our top three winners. Thank you to everyone who took the quiz, and we look forward to seeing you next week in San Diego!

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

The Department reminds the financial aid community of guidance related to the Social Security number (SSN) correction process with the Central Processing System (CPS).

x - FEDERAL REGISTER

On February 24, 2017, President Trump signed Executive Order 13777, "Enforcing the Regulatory Reform Agenda," which established a Federal policy "to alleviate unnecessary regulatory burdens" on the American people. Through this announcement, the Department is soliciting such input from the public to inform its Task Force's evaluation of existing regulations and guidance that have a policy impact.

National News

"Dr. Arthur Wayne Johnson, the private student loan company executive selected to head the Federal Student Aid agency (FSA), is affiliated with a company that a federal judge recently described as 'very aggressive' about fighting efforts to discharge student loans, court records obtained by Diverse show," according to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

State News

"The Charlotte School of Law has until early August to prove its financial stability or face revocation of its license to operate in North Carolina," The Charlotte Observer reports.

Opinions

"Among the many controversial proposals in the budget released by the Trump administration last month was the elimination of Public Service Loan Forgiveness, a program that forgives student loans for those who maintain 10 years of employment in the government or nonprofit sectors. While a tough sell, Congress would be taking a big step in the right direction by cutting the program," Beth Akers, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, writes in an opinion piece for The Hill.
