Student loan servicers are again in the hot seat with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), this time facing complaints that they mismanaged administration of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. A CFPB report, released Thursday, highlights borrower complaints about how their student loan servicers delayed, denied, or mishandled access to PSLF. Thank you all for you kind and encouraging comments on my first blog. It excites me to have the opportunity to continue to write, and keep you all updated! Last week was full of welcoming introductions and information-packed meetings. As the 2017 NASFAA National Conference is approaching, the entire office seems to be in "conference-mode." I look forward to meeting many of you at the NASFAA conference next week.

The Department reminds the financial aid community of guidance related to the Social Security number (SSN) correction process with the Central Processing System (CPS).

On February 24, 2017, President Trump signed Executive Order 13777, "Enforcing the Regulatory Reform Agenda," which established a Federal policy "to alleviate unnecessary regulatory burdens" on the American people. Through this announcement, the Department is soliciting such input from the public to inform its Task Force's evaluation of existing regulations and guidance that have a policy impact. 

"Dr. Arthur Wayne Johnson, the private student loan company executive selected to head the Federal Student Aid agency (FSA), is affiliated with a company that a federal judge recently described as 'very aggressive' about fighting efforts to discharge student loans, court records obtained by Diverse show," according to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

"The Charlotte School of Law has until early August to prove its financial stability or face revocation of its license to operate in North Carolina," The Charlotte Observer reports.

"Among the many controversial proposals in the budget released by the Trump administration last month was the elimination of Public Service Loan Forgiveness, a program that forgives student loans for those who maintain 10 years of employment in the government or nonprofit sectors. While a tough sell, Congress would be taking a big step in the right direction by cutting the program," Beth Akers, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, writes in an opinion piece for The Hill.
