Brianna's Blog

Today, you all are reading the last blog that I am writing as the Dallas Martin Endowment Policy Intern. Despite it being difficult to leave such an amazing association and Washington, D.C., I am filled with gratitude and much appreciation for all I have experienced in the last nine weeks. Ernie Harwell, a renowned American sportscaster, best summed up my feelings toward this experience when he said, "It's time to say goodbye, but I think goodbyes are sad, and I'd much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure."

The Department of Education's (ED) monitoring of possible conflicting information between 2016-17 and 2017-18 FAFSAs will continue throughout the 2017-18 FAFSA processing cycle, ED announced in an Electronic Announcement released yesterday. This corrects previous guidance announced at the 2016 FSA Conference. This action is taken because an error discovered by the comparison could affect 2017-18 data. After the September 9, 2017, deadline to submit corrections to 2016-17 data, institutions need take no further action for that years processing cycle.

Although most community college students do not receive employer-sponsored educational assistance benefits, those who do appear to have stronger retention and attainment outcomes than their peers, according to a new article in NASFAA's Journal of Student Financial Aid. Overall, students who had received employer aid were 2.7 percent less likely to be no longer enrolled with no degree or certificate, and 2.6 percent more likely to have transferred with an associate degree to a four-year institution, the study found. The researchers argued that because many community college students work while in school – and that it's unclear how many students may be eligible for these benefits, but not using them – the findings could have potential implications for legislation to promote the use of these benefits, or policies to encourage further investment from employers. Student Aid Index topics are updated regularly with new resources and for more effective ways of organizing information. A new subtopic was created under the Perkins Loan topic, Excess Liquid Capital. Many of the resources were housed under other subtopics. In looking at the needs of our members, it was decided Excess Liquid Capital and associated resources should be its own topic. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

During last year's Federal Student Aid Training Conference in Atlanta, the Department announced that, effective with the end of the corrections period for 2016-2017 FAFSAs on September 9, 2017, it would no longer compare information between applicants' 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 FAFSAs to identify possible conflicting information and to report any significant differences to institutions using SAR/ISIR Comment Code 399. Upon further consideration, to help ensure that Title IV aid is awarded on accurate information, the Department has decided to continue its monitoring of possible conflicting information between 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 FAFSAs throughout the 2017-2018 FAFSA processing cycle.

The Department has posted a report that notifies the community of the approved awards for the Federal Work-Study (FWS), Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), and Federal Perkins Loan (Perkins Loan) programs for the 2017-2018 Award Year.

The Department announces the availability of the updated National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS®) Transfer Student Monitoring (TSM)/ Financial Aid History (FAH) User Guide and Batch File Layouts.

"Nearly 25 years after a nationwide chain of beauty and secretarial schools was closed for defrauding students, the Department of Education has agreed to help victims wipe clean their burdensome federal student loan debts," The New York Times reports.

State News

"Since the presidential election, some have argued that colleges aren’t doing enough to help working-class people -- men in particular -- pursue the types of technical training that will get them good jobs. A community college in Arkansas, however, is among those that have found success with just that population, but it's with programs that are often short-term and difficult for students to pay for with federal financial aid," Inside Higher Ed reports.
