"As soon as the dust of Sept. 11 started to settle, college officials in Washington and New York started to worry. If tourists were shying away and even longtime residents were pondering whether to move, who, they wondered, would want to matriculate in a terror-target town?" The Washington Post reports that "Barely two months later, though, a surprising answer emerged: Who doesn't? Almost all the major colleges and universities in both cities report receiving at least as many applications from prospective students as they had at this time last year. Many are even on their way to setting records."
