NASFAA Reauthorization Task Force Considers Perkins Loan Program, Seeks Member Input

The NASFAA Reauthorization Task Force will discuss recommendations for changes to the Federal Perkins Loan Program from May 20 through 31. To date, suggestions received by the Task Force include:

  • Keep and expand the deferment and forgiveness benefits;
  • Adjust the institutional matching requirements;
  • Provide greater flexibility with the program administration;
  • Review the rehabilitation guidelines;
  • Eliminate the Perkins Loan Program and roll it into the Federal Stafford Loan Program.

    If you have thoughts or concerns about the Federal Perkins Loan Program that you would like to have the Task Force consider in its discussions, please send them by May 15 to reauth@nasfaa.org.

    The Task Force will prepare recommendations for reauthorization of the financial aid programs in the Higher Education Act to present to the NASFAA Board at its November 2002 meeting. The following schedule shows when the Reauthorization Task Force will discuss programs other than the Perkins Loan Program. [Note that the schedule for review of the loan programs has not yet been established.]
