September 11 Scholarship Alliance Launches Web Site with Guidance on Applying for Scholarship Funds

The September 11 Scholarship Alliance launched its Web site at http://www.scholarships911.org on Friday, May 17th. The Alliance coordinates scholarship funds created to assist families of people killed or permanently disabled in the terrorist attacks on America on September 11, 2001, as well as airplane crews and passengers, World Trade Center and Pentagon workers and visitors, and relief workers, including firefighters, law enforcement and Port Authority officers, and emergency medical personnel.

Scholarships are available for the dependent children, spouses, or domestic partners of victims. The scholarships may be used to attend an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the United States as well as in other countries. While most funds are directed to undergraduate study, some funds will provide scholarships for graduate study. Each of the funds listed has its own policies and requirements.

Family members seeking scholarship funds go through two steps: completing a registration form to establish eligibility and an application form to apply for scholarships. Families of victims are encouraged to register all dependents, including young children (newborn to high school) and spouses/domestic partners, as soon as possible. The application for scholarship funds occurs when a dependent is graduating high school, enrolling at a postsecondary school, or continuing the pursuit of a degree for another semester/quarter.

The September 11 Scholarship Alliance was formed by scholarship providers and associated organizations to simplify the scholarship application process for postsecondary education for the families of those who died or were permanently disabled in the terrorist attacks. The Alliance will serve as an information clearinghouse to help ensure that financial assistance for post-high school education, such as college, university and vocational-technical schools, gets into the hands of those who need it most with minimal paperwork and frustration. The Alliance is also collaborating to coordinate communications to families and reach out to other scholarship funds. Alliance members are Children's Aid Society, Citigroup Foundation, Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America, Inc. (CSFA), Institute for International Education/USFreightways Corporation, International Youth Foundation, Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation, and The Power of America Fund. NASFAA serves as an Advisory Member of the Alliance.

NASFAA's comprehensive listing of scholarship opportunities for families of September 11 victims at www.NASFAA.org/911scholarships.asp includes those offered by the Alliance as well as many additional scholarships that require separate applications. Some of the scholarships in the NASFAA listing also have specific eligibility requirements or are unique to particular institutions. NASFAA's September 11 Resource Page also provides policy guidance and related news and resources.
