Families of Freedom 2 Fund to Provide Scholarships for Needy 9/11 Families in Lower Manhattan

The Families of Freedom 2 Scholarship Fund has been established to help provide postsecondary scholarships for people who live or work in Lower Manhattan and whose income was drastically reduced due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Educational assistance will be offered to these people as well as their spouses and children. The fund's Web site is at http://www.familiesoffreedom2.org/.

Specifically, Families of Freedom 2 would benefit the following people who live or work in Lower Manhattan south of Houston Street who were economically impacted by the events on September 11, 2001:

  • business owners who lost or experienced a decline in business,
  • employees who lost their jobs,
  • their spouses, and
  • their children pursuing or preparing for postsecondary education.

The number of scholarships awarded will depend on the amount of funds raised for the program. The scope and duration of the scholarship program will also depend on the amount of monies raised.

The original Families of Freedom Fund recently reached its $100 million goal to provide education assistance for postsecondary study to dependents--children and spouses--of those killed or permanently disabled as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Families of Freedom 2: Building Futures Through Education Scholarship Fund was launched by the AXA financial services company and the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA). CSFA is launching the $10 million fundraising campaign for the Families of Freedom 2 Scholarship Fund with a $3 million donation from the AXA Foundation. As a founding partner of the Fund, AXA also is serving as Title Sponsor of the Families of Freedom 2 fundraiser to be held on Wednesday, November 20 at City Center in New York City. CSFA will design, administer and manage the scholarship program, as well as provide administrative and fundraising support for the event.
