NASFAA Transmits to Congress Reauthorization Recommendations with Statutory Changes

On June 27th, NASFAA transmitted to the leaders of the House and Senate authorizing committees the Association's recommendations for changes in the Higher Education Act (HEA) with specific statutory language. The Association's recommendation were sent to Capitol Hill earlier, but did not include specific legislative language since staff needed time to develop it and the legislative committee deadlines were too early to accommodate the project.

Those earlier recommendations were sent to the House Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness on December 19, 2002, to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions on May 22, 2003, and to the Department of Education on March 7, 2003.

The format identifies the issue (and statutory citation where possible), NASFAA's recommendation, rationale, current HEA statutory language, and the Association's proposed modifications to the law. The following format is used for indicating changes in the law:

  • Where there were no changes in the current statute a standard font was used (for example, Pell Grant).
  • Where legislative language was added a bold font was used (for example, Pell Grant).
  • Where the striking of current legislative language was recommended, a strikeout font was used (for example, Pell Grant).

Since this is a very large document, the recommendations are available in section as well as in a single document. All documents are in PDF format and indicate the number of pages in the document.

If you wish to have all the above recommendations in a single document, a Compiled Recommendation document is available that runs 176 pages.
