The Sallie Mae Fund has announced that it will extend the deadline to participate in a special offer to match donations made by individuals at NASFAA Member institutions to the American Red Cross, for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The new deadline is October 31 or until funds run out, whichever comes first.
The Fund's offer would provide a dollar-for-dollar match for all donations of $25 or greater, up to a total match of $150,000 by the Fund.
Currently $54,797 in donations have been made by NASFAA Members and matched by Sallie Mae, for a total donation to the Red Cross of $109,594 as of close of business October 3.
On September 14 The Sallie Mae Fund issued a clarification for those who donated to the Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina (which made landfall in the Gulf Coast on August 29), but before the matching offer was made. For those individuals, Sallie Mae will accept either a copy of the check that was sent or a computer print-out showing confirmation of an on-line donation. Sallie Mae will also accept a credit card statement assuming it shows the donor's name, the date, and the amount of the gift to the Red Cross.
Unfortunately, if the donation was made over the phone and the donor does not have a confirmation number or a credit card receipt, Sallie Mae cannot verify that a donation was made and provide a matching donation.
Verifying information on pre-existing donations, as well as new donations of $25 or more, should be sent to the Sallie Mae Fund, attention "Sallie Mae Fund NASFAA Match," on or before September 30, 2005. New checks should be made payable to the American Red Cross. All matching donation information must be sent to:
