News from NASFAA

Reminder: 2006-07 CORE In-Service Training Materials Available

The 2006-07 edition of CORE is a comprehensive set of instructional materials designed by NASFAA for training financial aid professionals with less than two years experience. CORE's 13 modules cover financial aid administration from A to Z! It includes topics such as application processing, need analysis, cost of attendance, verification, return of Title IV funds, professional judgment, and more.

  • CORE's flexible design enables you to teach small or large groups.
  • Topics can be reordered to suit your own needs.
  • CORE is designed for structured training, not as a self-learning tool. Each CORE module contains an instructor's guide and an accompanying trainee handout.
  • A case study approach is used throughout to help illustrate the points and principles taught.
  • A PowerPoint presentation is included for each module.
  • When printed, a full set of CORE contains over 1,500 pages of instructional materials!
  • CORE is available on CD-ROM only.
CAUTION: On February 8, 2006, The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 was signed into law. This legislation included the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 (HERA), which contained many changes to the Higher Education Act. Changes affecting the 2006-07 award year have been incorporated into these materials insofar as possible. However, at the time of this writing, many questions regarding implementation of the changes remained unanswered, and technical amendments further revising the law was a distinct possibility.

The Return of Title IV funds worksheets used throughout Module 12-Return of Title IV Funds have not been updated and reflect guidance prior to July 1, 2006, which is the effective date of the HERA modifications that affect the return of Title IV funds formula. It should be further noted that the material relating to the return of Title IV funds contained in the Department of Education's 2006-07 FSA Handbook as posted through April 15, 2006, also does not reflect the changes brought about by HERA.

Given the timing of the HERA's enactment, however, the updating of these CORE materials had to proceed with the information available and the law in place. We have tried to point out the changes where they are addressed so you can check either the NASFAA Web site or the Department of Education's IFAP Web site prior to presenting these materials to determine whether additional changes or guidance have occurred.

Modules cannot be purchased individually. CORE is updated by May 1 every year and is available while supplies last. The minimum cost for the 2006-07 update for institutional members is $200 and provides 20 training licenses (that is, handouts and PowerPoint may be reproduced to instruct up to 20 individuals). Additional training licenses may be purchased for $10 each. Additional information and an order form are available on-line.

State and Regional Associations: Please contact Connie McCormick at McCormickM@NASFAA.org for ordering information. The $200 price applies only to institutional and constituent members of the Association.
