A committee of leading experts in financial education has develop a step-by-step, how-to-guide to help campus administrators and financial professionals develop and implement successful financial education programs on college campuses.
The committee also developed three financial education brochures that can be distributed to students. The materials are free and can be downloaded, printed, and personalized by any campus.
"The whole purpose of this project was to get some useful materials into the hands of campus administrators, especially those in financial aid," said Dr. Angela Lyons, a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who headed the committee.
Get Financially Fit! A Financial Education Toolkit for College Campuses includes six sections:
- The "Toolkit": What Do Students Need to Know to be Financially Fit? - describes what students need to know and identifies just a few of the many resources available to deliver financial education to college students
- Building a Successful Program: What Will Your Program Look Like? - provides guidance for creating a successful financial education program on your college campus including best practices and examples of successful financial education efforts
- Marketing Financial Education to Students: How Do You Successfully Reach Students? - discusses marketing a financial education program on your campus
- Strength in Numbers: What Partners and Resources Are Available? - identifies potential partners and opportunities to pool resources
- Developing an Effective Evaluation: How Do You Measure Your Program's Success? - provides guidance on how to develop an effective program evaluation
- Putting It All Together: Building Your Campus Action Plan - provides a set of questions to help you "Build an Action Plan" based on your campus' available resources and expertise
The financial education toolkit can be downloaded from the American Council on Consumer Interests (ACCI) Web site.
The site also provides a list of specific financial education programs for college students.
Get Financially Fit! A Financial Education Series for College Students is a three-part brochure series highlighting valuable information that every college student needs to know about financial management. The series helps students take charge of their financial future with a Warm-Up, a Work-Out, and Weigh-In with topics such as spending, using credit, saving money and avoiding identity theft. The brochures also provide students with links to helpful Web sites that will enhance their overall financial fitness plan.
