Great Lakes Funds MSU Scholarship For Migrant Workers

$200,000 Commitment Builds On Department of Education Grant

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State University's efforts to support migrant youths' pursuit of a college education will be enhanced by a new scholarship program. Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation is designating $200,000 to establish a Great Lakes College Assistance Migrant Program Persistence Assistance Support Scholarship, or CAMP PASS. The scholarship was formally announced this month by MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon and Great Lakes' President and CEO Richard D. George on the MSU campus.

"Great Lakes is dedicated to helping students pursue their dreams for a higher education, persist through graduation, and perform in their careers and lives after college," said Luis Garcia, MSU CAMP director. "When members of Great Lakes visited campus last year, they had an opportunity to review our program operations and hear student presentations," Garcia said. "In January, the corporation let us know of its commitment of $200,000 over the next four to five years to offset the MSU College Assistance Migrant Program students' loan burdens as they earn their degrees."

The scholarship funds will be presented in equal installments during the remaining period of the program's most recent five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Migrant Education.

"Meeting with the College Assistance Migrant Program students and hearing their journeys cemented our decision to lend our support via the CAMP PASS scholarship," George said. "These students represent the embodiment of Great Lakes' commitment to helping students build better lives through education. We look forward to working with the program to make a difference in the lives of these students and their families."

The scholarships can cover any reasonable educational costs and are designed to reduce the student's reliance on educational loans.

The MSU CAMP is an educational program offering individuals with migrant to seasonal farm work backgrounds the opportunity to begin their undergraduate program at MSU.
