Financial Aid in the News

Brown's Tuition-Aid Law For Firefighters Praised (The Toledo Blade)

"With dozens of Toledo firefighters standing behind him, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) yesterday touted a recently enacted federal law that will help firefighters pay for their college tuition," The Toledo Blade reports. "The legislation, written by Mr. Brown, was signed into law last month and provides loan forgiveness to full-time firefighters in local, state, and federal jurisdictions. The law provides 15 percent loan forgiveness for the first and second years of college, 20 percent for the third and fourth years, and 30 percent for the fifth year, Mr. Brown said. The legislation was included as a provision in the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 as an effort to recruit and retain firefighters who are proficient in the latest fire protection technologies, Mr. Brown said."
