Pennsylvania: College To Offer Higher Return On Savings Plans (Associated Press)
"As elite private schools pledge to eliminate or reduce student debt by boosting financial aid, a small Pennsylvania liberal arts college is trying to encourage more families to save for college," the Associated Press reports. "Dickinson College in Carlisle is promising a higher rate of return on the Independent 529 plan, a tax-free college savings plan sponsored by more than 270 private colleges. Encouraging families to save more for college has been overlooked amid a flurry of pledges by top schools such as Harvard, Duke and the University of Pennsylvania to replace loans with grants for some or all students, said Robert Massa, Dickinson's vice president for enrollment and college relations. 'You cannot expect higher education's crisis to be met simply by increasing financial aid,' Massa said."
