NSLP And Nebraska Financial Aid Administrators Kick Off Nebraska Financial Literacy Week

Statewide seminars will enhance money management skills of college students.

(March 28, 2008) - Throughout the week of March 31 through April 4, on college campuses throughout Nebraska, the National Student Loan Program's accredited financial counselors will deliver financial education seminars to college students as part of "Nebraska Financial Literacy Week."

"Students are overwhelmed with messages that teach them how to get easy money and spend it. They clearly need help identifying and managing realistic financial goals," says Sharon Cabeen, NSLP's Vice President of Financial Literacy. "We'll address that need by helping students learn how to budget properly, giving them tips so they don't get overextended on credit and debt, and providing them with knowledge to develop a plan to repay their obligations, including their student loans."

NSLP and the Nebraska Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NeASFAA) are joining forces to provide college students at eight campuses across the state with vital information and tools they need to make sound financial decisions.

  • Grace University, Omaha
  • Hastings College, Hastings
  • McCook Community College, McCook
  • North Platte Community College, North Platte
  • Nebraska Wesleyan, Lincoln
  • Northeast Community College, Norfolk
  • University of Nebraska-Kearney
  • University of Nebraska-Omaha

Throughout the week students, as well as others on campus, will be able to attend seminars on a variety of topics such as budgeting, wise use of credit cards, identity theft, money management, student loan repayment options, and financing education.

The goal of "Nebraska Financial Literacy Week" is to enhance the money management skills of college students and to raise public awareness about the importance of a sound financial education for young adults. NSLP and NeASFAA are coordinating this event because it's important to provide college students with the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in life, including providing them with information they need to make good financial decisions that will help them achieve their dreams. This week-long, statewide event is part of recognizing "National Financial Literacy Awareness Month" in April.
