President Bush signed a one-month extension of the Higher Education Act (HEA) on March 24. This was the 10th extension of the HEA. The ninth extension would have expired at the end of March. The current extension expires on April 30.

The Senate and House have passed separate versions of an HEA reauthorization bill, but negotiators have not reconciled differences between the two versions yet. The extension gives negotiators one month to negotiate differences between the two bills.

The HEA was last reauthorized in 1998.
