Yesterday the Senate voted to extend (S. 2929) the Higher Education Act through May 31, 2008. The bill will next be voted on by the House before being signed by the President. While this brief, one-month extension comes after several other extensions in recent months, lawmakers say they remain committed to finishing HEA reauthorization soon. The Senate and House have passed separate versions of the legislation that sets financial aid and higher education policies, and are currently working to negotiate the differences between the two versions of the bill.
NASFAA is closely monitoring HEA reauthorization developments and has set up a HEA Implementation Resources Web Center to provide all HEA-related material in one location.
