Department Says Teach Grant Not Subject To Verification
NASFAA recently inquired of the Department whether the TEACH Grant program is subject to the verification requirements under 34 CFR Part 668 Subpart E. According to the Department, the negotiated rulemaking committee agreed that because TEACH is not a need-based program, it is not necessary to subject the TEACH Grant program to the verification requirements under 34 CFR part 688, subpart E. The Department also said that while it is not explicitly stated in the proposed TEACH Grant regulations, verification requirements will be covered in the preamble to the upcoming NPRM.
The regulations in 34 CFR Part 668 Subpart E govern the verification by institutions of information submitted by applicants for student financial assistance in connection with the calculation of their expected family contributions (EFC) for the Federal Pell Grant, ACG, National SMART Grant, campus-based, Federal Stafford Loan, and Federal Direct Stafford Loan programs. If the Secretary or the institution requests documents or information from an applicant under this subpart, the applicant shall provide the specified documents or information.
