NASFAA Appoints Joan Crissman as Interim President & CEO

NASFAA National Chair David Gruen announced today that Joan Crissman has been appointed to serve as the Interim NASFAA President effective immediately. Ms. Crissman has worked for the Association since July 1977 and has served as NASFAA's executive vice president. She also served as NASFAA Interim President after Past President Dr. Dallas Martin retired in 2007.

"NASFAA is fortunate to have such a knowledgeable, experienced professional to assume leadership during this time," Gruen said. "She has served NASFAA for nearly 32 years and most of that time has been spent in an executive role. Joanie will provide the leadership the Association needs to ensure that financial aid offices and the students they serve are represented during these historic times for financial aid."

Gruen emphasized that all NASFAA services to members and advocacy on behalf of students will continue unhindered by recent developments.

"Under the direction of Ms. Crissman, NASFAA staff will continue its work to influence the upcoming legislative process so that it benefits financial aid offices and the students they serve," Gruen said. "In addition, NASFAA retains productive working relationships with key U.S. Department of Education officials -- many who are on their way to San Antonio to share their knowledge at NASFAA's annual conference."

For the past year, NASFAA has been engaged in the National Conversation Initiative, a process that has included direct feedback from the membership on how to revamp the student aid system. Recommendations vetted through NCI have been instrumental in NASFAA's advocacy efforts over the last few months.

"The core staff involved in the NCI process remains intact," Gruen said. "While the NCI project is far from complete, the input we've gathered from members through this process will continue to guide our efforts to make college more accessible and affordable."

"I am devoted to moving NASFAA forward in this role," Crissman said. "Members can rest assured that all services and advocacy efforts will continue as planned."

Crissman will remain as interim president during the absence of Dr. Philip R. Day, Jr., who voluntarily requested an unpaid administrative leave to deal with recent allegations stemming from his prior employment with City College of San Francisco.
