The Department of Education (ED) has posted a draft of the 2010-11 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

There are three significant changes to the paper FAFSA for the 2010-11 award year, including:

  • Questions 44(f) and 92(f) have been added to the Additional Financial Information sections for students and parents. These questions will collect amounts for earnings from work under a cooperative education program. The Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) excludes these earnings from the EFC calculation.

  • The two questions on veterans education benefits have been deleted. The HEOA excludes veterans education benefits from the definition of estimated financial assistance.

  • The question on the student's marital status (Question 16) has been reformatted. "Single" has been separated from "divorced or widowed."

The 2010-11 FAFSA on the Web will be available on ED's demo site at www.fafsademo.ed.gov in mid-December.

We encourage you to review the draft paper FAFSA and submit your comments and suggestions on both the paper FAFSA and FAFSA on the Web to the Department of Education at FAFSA.Comments@ed.gov. In addition, please submit a copy of your comments to NASFAA at FAFSAComments@nasfaa.org so that we can represent the interests and concerns of our member institutions.

Comments on the paper FAFSA are due by November 4, 2009.
