A Mixed Picture on the Economy’s Impact on Requests for Financial Aid (New York Times)

"I went to a College Board panel on Thursday morning on financial aid and college enrollment, expecting a lot of hand-wringing from college officials about the impact of the recession," writes Jack Kadden in the New York Times. "Even before the session began, I overheard a member of the audience say, 'I think we're going to hand out razor blades.' But the discussion presented a much more complex picture than I expected. Officials of two public colleges described huge increases in requests for financial aid and told of the struggles many students were facing in finding the money to stay in school. But officials of two small private colleges said that while they had feared the worst, it never materialized. Enrollment was up, they said, and requests for additional financial aid had been minimal. Their colleges were doing so well, in fact, they had given out raises as usual this year, they said."
