Colorado: Vets in College Struggle With Delayed GI Bill Benefits (The Denver Post)

"Some 60,000 applications for post- 9/11 GI Bill benefits remain unprocessed nationwide, leaving some veterans waiting for tuition and stipend payments as enrollment for the spring academic semester begins," The Denver Post reports. "In Colorado, many veterans have been processed into the system, but others are still waiting, forcing colleges to create systems to help keep them enrolled in school. ... At Red Rocks Community College, Donna Merriman of the Office of Veterans Affairs said only three or four of the 123 students who are on the GI Bill have been paid their living expenses through normal channels. 'A lot of new students have been impacted,' she said. To keep track, the college created a spreadsheet that is shared among the registrar, the cashier, the financial aid department and the veterans office to make sure that the veterans continue attending college while waiting for their funds and are not charged late fees. 'We're not holding this against them,' she said. 'We're not going to penalize them for something beyond their control.'"
