Financial Aid in the News

Michigan: School Funding, College Grant Cuts Approved (Detroit Free Press)

"All Michigan school districts would have their state aid cut by $218 per student, while intermediate school districts would lose 44% of their funding, under a 2009-10 school aid budget approved by a House and Senate conference committee today. The action came a few hours after another committee voted to eliminate the Promise tuition grant for 96,000 college students this year," the Detroit Free Press reports. "The Democrat-led state House could vote on the proposals as early as Thursday, sending them to the Republican-led Senate before an Oct. 1 budget deadline. And Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who strongly opposes cutting the Promise grant, has proposed paying for the tuition grant and other programs by raising $685 million in new revenue. Some of that would come from tax increases, and the rest from cutting some business tax exemptions."
