Vets' Return to Campus Is an Uneasy Transition (Indianapolis Star)
"[U]neasiness is common for students who have transitioned from combat to the classroom," the Indianapolis Star reports. "And it's among the issues that universities are trying to confront as they aggressively reach out to and recruit returning troops to take advantage of the new GI bill. ... 'We've had lots of inquiries about the program,' said Tom Applegate, director of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. For the schools, the improved benefit could bolster student populations that are expected to decline in the coming years. Campus officials are scrambling to entice the potential soldier-scholars."
