Teacher Shortage Areas Nationwide Listing, 1990-91 through 2009-10, Now Available

The Department of Education has posted an updated version of the comprehensive Teacher Shortage Areas Nationwide Listing. The document, updated in March, 2009, enumerates all shortage areas in all states during the years 1990-91 through 2009-10.

The listing identifies qualified "high-need" subject areas for use in processing:

  • Deferments for borrowers who had no outstanding Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loan on July 1, 1987 but who had an outstanding FFEL Program loan on July 1, 1993;
  • Loan cancellation for Federal Perkins Loan borrowers;
  • Reduction of teaching obligation for recipients of the Teacher Education Assistance For College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program; and
  • Reduction of teaching obligation for recipients of the Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship Program.
To identify schools that qualify as "low-income," visit the Teacher Cancellation Low Income Directory.
