NASFAA Urges Support for Bill Eliminating Taxes on Loan Benefits
NASFAA encourages members to contact their Representative and Senators in the U.S. Congress to urge them to cosponsor H.R. 2492, a bill that would prevent the taxation of student loan debt forgiven through the Income-Based Repayment (IBR) and Income Contingent Repayment (ICR) programs.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI) and currently has 31 cosponsors, including four Republicans and the chairman of the Education and Labor Committee, George Miller (D-CA). In addition, last month the Obama Administration announced its support of H.R. 2492 at a meeting of the Middle Class Task Force on college affordability, which was held at Syracuse University and attended by Vice President Joe Biden and Secretaries Geithner and Duncan.
To increase the likelihood that H.R. 2492 is enacted this year, NASFAA would like your help to increase the number of cosponsors, particularly those on the Ways and Means and Education and Labor committees. Even if you have previously contacted members on those committees, it would be helpful if you could contact them again now to ask them to cosponsor.
Thank you for your support of H.R. 2492 and your assistance. Please let us know if you have any questions by emailing policy@nasfaa.org
