Topic: NASFAA's National Conversation Initiative (NCI) Preliminary Recommendations
Date Recorded: April 22, 2009
Duration: 55 minutes
NASFAA held this online event to release the National Conversation Initiative Preliminary Recommendations, a coherent framework of integrated recommendations for student aid reform. NASFAA staff also answered questions from participants about the preliminary recommendations.
The NCI Preliminary Recommendations Report is the result of NASFAA's exhaustive NCI campaign, launched in April 2008, a national dialogue for building consensus, support, and enactment of reforms needed to eliminate major obstacles to college access, namely the financial barriers for low- and moderate-income students.
The report was also delivered to the Obama administration, key Capitol Hill staff, and NASFAA members on Tuesday. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan responded to the proposal, saying "I appreciate NASFAA's efforts to reach out ... and to bring together new ideas through a thoughtful and deliberative process." Duncan said that "NASFAA's proposal will be fully reviewed and considered as the policy debate on student loans, other financial aid, and higher education issues continues."
