The NASFAA 2006 Staffing Self-Assessment Tool
This staffing size self-assessment tool is a spreadsheet rendition of the staffing model worksheet in Appendix A of the 2006 NASFAA Research Committee’s Staffing Survey Report. It provides a user-friendly tool that allows office administrators to estimate the appropriate number of employees needed to staff a financial aid office. It also offers an objective methodology for predicting normative staff size for institutions with similar characteristics.
It is important to note that since this model is based on survey responses, the results of the self-assessment tool could be biased. For example, if financial aid offices nationwide tend to be understaffed, the results from this tool would predict an average that is lower than the actual number of employees required to provide an optimal staffing level. Likewise, if you under-state the staff size of other student services offices, you might yield slightly smaller staff sizes for the financial aid office from this model because staff size of an aid office is positively correlated with the number of employees working in other student services offices. This model accounts for 77 percent of the variance associated with staff size.
The 2006 survey finds four major factors to influence the staff size of a financial aid office: workload, staff size of other student services offices, volume of aid administered, and participation in specific programs.
