Thousands to Gather at NASFAA National Conference to Discuss the Future of Student Aid

NASFAA’s Annual Conference Will Be Held June 24-27 in Austin, TX

June 8, 2018—Later this month, thousands of financial aid practitioners, researchers, and thought leaders from across the United States will gather in Austin for a unique training and professional development opportunity that will equip student aid professionals with the tools they need to better serve students and families.

The National Association of Student Financial Administrators’ (NASFAA) 2018 National Conference will host more than 2,000 practicing financial aid administrators as they teach, learn, network, and share valuable information on federal student aid programs. Attendees will have the opportunity to get a head start on their learning opportunity Sunday afternoon with a pre-conference diversity event focusing on implicit bias. Lena Tenney of The Ohio State University will equip attendees with a deeper understanding of the ways in which our implicit associations that operate unconsciously outside our awareness, which often times conflict with our explicit beliefs, impact our decision making.

Later that afternoon, the annual conference will officially kick off with an opening address from New York Times best-selling author Wes Moore. Moore’s presentations focus on his remarkable personal story of overcoming adversity through education, embracing personal responsibility, and emerging as an inspirational leader.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from 2017-18 NASFAA National Chair Billie Jo Hamilton, NASFAA President Justin Draeger, and representatives from the U.S. Department of Education (ED). In a Federal Update session Tuesday morning, ED staff will present information about current issues for the Title IV student aid programs and provide updates about the Department's regulatory efforts. In the final session capping off the conference Wednesday morning, NASFAA policy staff will lead NASFAA’s “Inside the Beltway” session to give up-to-date information on what’s buzzing on Capitol Hill, at ED, and the White House.
