National Training for Counselors and Mentors

Many students are intimidated or confused by the process of finding money for college. Because a secondary school counselor or other mentor is frequently the first person a student turns to for advice, it is crucial that counselors have the tools they need to help their students. Training is essential to share those tools and increase counselors' knowledge of the financial aid process.

The National Training for Counselors and Mentors (NT4CM) program supports states by providing free training, information, resources, and tools (for counselors and mentors) about federal, state, and local financial aid programs.

This nationally recognized program offers "train-the-trainer" education to professionals responsible in turn for disseminating knowledge to local counselors and mentors, and a suite of supporting collateral. The curriculum is customizable and can to be tailored to the training needs of your state. For example, you may present the entire program, or you may opt to incorporate only specific modules into your existing curriculum.

If your state already offers financial aid training to counselors and mentors, we can support your current efforts by linking to your training information on the Web, providing National Training for Counselors and Mentors materials, or even hosting your online registration.

Participating states receive free publicity materials to promote state training and initiatives, and ongoing support and suggestions from other participating states.

National Training for Counselors and Mentors was founded as a joint partnership between NASFAA, the U.S. Department of Education Office of Federal Student Aid, and the National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs. Participation has now been expanded to include other leading higher education associations and groups.
