Case Study: Suffolk University

August 2021

Goals

To support student engagement with financial literacy education

Situation

The Student Financial Services team at Suffolk University had previously provided financial literacy education, but did not receive a strong response to the sessions. Suffolk had the staff resources to deliver financial literacy presentations to its students, but not the capacity to research and develop the content and explore new presentation methods.

Solution

Blue Icon Advisors consulted with the school on its previous efforts and suggested changes to improve attendance. The consultant provided a customized presentation and delivery notes on the topic of Understanding Student Loans. The consultant also provided a "train the trainer" session to help prepare staff to deliver the content.

Outcome

Michelle LaBonte, associate director of student financial services, reported a huge increase in attendance: 75 attendees in comparison with an average of 10 during past sessions. "It was great to have someone build the content and train us to present it," LaBonte said. "It was 98 percent ready to go!" The way the content was developed and presented also resonated with the audience. "Sometimes you forget that people don't deal with loans every day," she said.

Suffolk is excited to work with Blue Icon again to develop additional financial literacy training modules.
