Check out her video to hear more of her thoughts on the conference speakers, which sessions she attended, and what she learned about financial aid policy. June 28, 2019 - Four Questions That Will Determine the Future of Student Aid
With a presidential election and potential reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA) on the horizon, opinions abound regarding how to reform the country's higher education system to better serve students. While lawmakers may be zeroing in on specific policy proposals, there are larger questions being debated, albeit unknowingly. During the final session of the 2019 NASFAA National Conference in Orlando Thursday, NASFAA President Justin Draeger and Vice President of Policy and Federal Relations Megan Coval shed some light on what impact these policy proposals have for the fundamental philosophy of higher education.
June 28, 2019 - Join Us in Congratulating NASFAA's 2019 Award Winners
Each year, NASFAA presents awards to the most deserving members of the financial aid profession and higher education community. These awards are reviewed and selected annually by NASFAA's Awards Committee and ratified by the Board of Directors. This year's awards were presented earlier this week at the 2019 National Conference in Orlando. Have a look at the outstanding individuals, institutions, associates, and state and regional associations we honored this year and join us in congratulating them on their achievements and contributions to the profession.
The third day of the 2019 NASFAA National Conference offered attendees the opportunity to learn about issues with the Parent PLUS Loan program, the difference between diversity and inclusion, and how to design emergency aid programs that support students, among many other topics. They also had the opportunity to hear from Department of Education officials during Wednesday morning's Federal Update session, and celebrate the work of colleagues during the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Luncheon. Catch up on all the action on our 2019 Conference Summaries page. And don't forget to follow along with our final session this morning on Facebook and Twitter using #NASFAA2019.
In their Wednesday morning Federal Update session at the 2019 NASFAA National Conference, officials from the Department of Education (ED)—including Federal Student Aid Chief Operating Officer Mark Brown, and ED's Lynn Mahaffie and Jeff Appel—provided a slew of updates to conference attendees, including a recap of implications for aid programs as a result of the fiscal year 2019 spending agreement, upcoming final regulations for accreditation, borrower defense, and gainful employment, and news that ED plans to soon require advanced financial literacy before students can take out federal loans. Read the full recap of the session in the 2019 Conference Summaries page.
The second day of the 2019 NASFAA National Conference offered attendees the opportunity to learn about students' thoughts on applying for financial aid and navigating how to set up a budget to pay for college, how the way institutions present and award loans to students could influence their behavior, and about interventions other financial aid administrators have implemented on their campuses to improve student financial wellness, among many other topics. They also had the opportunity to watch the "Off The Cuff" team record this week's podcast. Catch up on all the action on our 2019 Conference Summaries page. And don't forget to follow along with all that's going on today on Facebook and Twitter using #NASFAA2019.

It's something we're told from a very young age: Don't judge a book by its cover. Steve Pemberton said that although he was given a life sentence as a child—“not a chance in the world”—he was able to persevere and find his place in the world because certain people in his life chose to look past the picture of a young boy placed into foster care. Pemberton, a best-selling author, innovative diversity and inclusion thought leader, and acclaimed speaker, gave the keynote address at the opening session of the 2019 NASFAA National Conference, which kicked off in Orlando on Monday. Check out our 2019 Conference Facebook album for some pictures from the opening session and other shots from the first day. You can keep up with all that's happening on day two by keeping an eye on our conference summaries page, where we'll be posting summaries throughout the day, and following along on Facebook and Twitter using #NASFAA2019.
The 2019 NASFAA National Conference starts today! If you're not here in Orlando or on your way to town, you can still participate. With NASFAA Live, our livestreaming conference option, you and your colleagues can actively participate in the conference without stepping foot off campus. You can watch all our general sessions and a great selection of our interest sessions on your computer or mobile device. Better yet, after the conference has ended you'll have access to on-demand recordings so you and your staff can catch up on sessions you may have missed while they were being livestreamed.
