IRS 'Get Transcript Online' Service Restored

The IRS "Get Transcript Online" service has been restored for users who are able to create an IRS online account. Individuals can use this service to request a:

  • Tax Return Transcript;
  • Tax Account Transcript;
  • Record of Account Transcript;
  • Wage and Income Transcript; and
  • Verification of Nonfiling Letter.

NASFAA was also able to request a Tax Return Transcript and Tax Account Transcript using the IRS “Get Transcript by Mail” service. However, we are uncertain if delivery still will be delayed due to IRS staffing issues related to the government shutdown. Additional services that require IRS staff processing will most certainly be delayed, if not discontinued, until Congress and President Donald Trump reach an agreement to fund government operations. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) continues to function, according to ED officials.

Remember! Effective for verifications completed on or after Jan. 9, 2019, schools can accept signed copies of tax returns and written statements of nonfiling under most circumstances, including when the student or parent is unable to obtain a tax transcript or nonfiling letter because of the government shutdown. See the Jan. 9, 2019 Electronic Announcement, “Changes to 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 Verification Requirements” and NASFAA’s Today’s News article, “ED Releases Highly-Anticipated Verification Guidance.”
