NASFAA Mention: Forward Focus: What Students and Parents Are Doing to Foot the Bill of College

"According to data from Forbes in 2018, 44.2 million Americans have student loan debt with some figures putting the total student loan debt in the country into trillions of dollars. The staggering price tag that comes with an advanced degree wouldn’t be possible for many students without the help of student loans.

For students to qualify for federal student aid, they must use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. It’s a form that can be complication but must be submitted every year to be considered for aid.

'Most of our families are honest. Most of them are just trying to do the right thing and you do have some errors because it’s a complicated system,' Meyers said.

The U.S. Department of Education oversees the FAFSA process and program. Current data shows in Michigan, 326,693 applications were submitted in 2019, to date. Meyers said the application can be complicated. There are several tips to make the process easier, including apply earlier. The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators put a checklist together to make the application process easier."
